"Beyond Visible", an exhibit of photos by Kathy Hornsby of Williamsburg, VA

At the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center, September 27 - November 4.

Kathy Hornsby, a gifted painter and photographer, travels the world in search of extraordinary subjects. Her show, "Beyond Visible: Infrared Photography" brings to the Williamsburg a collection of over 30 infrared images inspired by her travels, from Namibia to New Mexico.

For her infrared photographs, she used digital cameras with sensors converted to “see” only near infrared light. This technology combined with her skill enables Hornsby to capture landscapes, still lifes, and environmental portraits that at first glance appear to be time-honored black and white images. Upon further inspection, they reveal themselves to have a slight twist. Warm and cool tones emerge, atmosphere haze is penetrated, skin appears milky and porcelain-smooth, and a slightly surreal effect may be suggested.

Hornsby worked with fine art printer Brittany Nelson of FlattenImage to achieve nuanced prints on archival paper.
